- Thanks to Xcel Energy, National Park Service and American Whitewater this stretch of river offers recreational releases that are provided when whitewater opportunities are typically rare because of lower river flows, and benefits the region by offering whitewater opportunities on the Chippewa River where they do not currently exist (Written by American Whitewater). The Jim Falls Hydroelectric Project (FERC P-2491) under The Lower Chippewa River Settlement Agreement (LCRSA) was approved on February 12, 2003. This stretch of whitewater offers a series of class I / II / -III drops. From April 1st through May 31st, 850 cfs is released 24/7 to enhance Lake Sturgeon spawning habitat. During the summer 4 - 650 cfs releases are held to provide whitewater boating opportunities in the Chippewa River bypassed reach at the Jim Falls Project. In addition to releases, this site is also host of Safety Days clinics held through-out the summer brought to you by whitewater enthusiasts’ of the Chippewa Valley Area.
